Welcome from Mrs. Barbie Jones
I attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I returned to IUP and obtained a Master of Education degree in School Counseling. An interest in leadership led me to enroll in the Principal Certification program at IUP, where I earned my PK-12 Principal Certification. I have completed post-master level coursework focusing on Early Childhood Education from both the University of Pennsylvania and Saint Vincent College. Fun fact, I am a proud graduate of Derry Area High School!
Upon earning my Bachelor's degree, I returned to my alma mater and was hired by the Derry Area School Board as an elementary teacher. I taught first grade at New Derry Elementary School. During the 2004-2005 school year, I taught half-day kindergarten at New Derry and Bradenville Elementary Schools. In 2005, I taught full-day kindergarten at New Derry Elementary. In 2006, the School Board hired me as the Instructional Leader of New Derry Elementary School. I worked as the Instructional Leader at New Derry Elementary until the building closed in 2011. In 2009, I accepted a position as the district's Elementary Lead Mentor, assisting new teachers and their mentors through the induction process. In 2013, the School Board hired me as the Early Childhood Liaison to promote partnerships and provide early literacy opportunities for parents, caregivers, early childhood educators, and the tiniest Trojan learners in our district (spanning the ages of Birth - 5). Currently, I am teaching computer and several STEAM classes at Grandview Elementary School and continue to serve our district as the Early Childhood Liaison.
Memberships & Volunteer Work
I am a member of the Western Pennsylvania Early Literacy Team, the ECE Local Leadership Council, and the Derry Area School District Foundation, where I proudly serve as an active board member. During the summer of 2020, I helped forge a partnership with the Latrobe Elks Lodge #907. I assisted in writing for grant funding to make the Dolly Parton Imagination Library a reality for the youngest boys and girls of the Derry Area School District. I enjoy spending time volunteering for this exciting project which provides free books for our future students.
